Succession Planning – Identifying Crucial Positions

Succession Planning is the process of pinpointing the crucial positions in your organization, and creating plans for current and future workers to assume these positions.

This can be considered a contingency plan to ensure that your productivity does not drop, assuming current staff leave for better job opportunities.

A crucial role requires specialized and experienced staff manning it. While these are sometimes managerial roles, the nature of your business ultimately decides which roles are crucial.

Crucial roles must always be held and in their absence there is a noticeable drop in productivity. These are roles that key talent – natural or trained – occupy.

To determine if a role qualifies for succession planning, there are a number of questions that must be answered.

Would the loss of this role create a drop in productivity?

• Does this role require specialized knowledge?

• Is there a high barrier to entry for this role?

• Is this role a managerial role?

• If the answer to even one of these questions is yes, then you are in need of a comprehensive succession planning solution.
